Redesigning Your Website? Redirects Are Your Best Friend

A friend (to remain unnamed) recently relaunched his website. It looks cool, but they instantly lost years of deep search engine links and ranking, killed in-bound links from other websites, and generally blew away a lot of tasty, wholesome search engine goodness.

How did they do that?

They neglected one of the key elements of a redesign project - something called "redirects."

The good news for you is that it is very easy to prevent this ranking loss, but it needs to be managed BEFORE you relaunch, then implemented simultaneously with the relaunch. All you need to do is talk with your web designer/developer about "redirects" before you start your redesign project. The designer should know what to do after that.

So, what is a "redirect" and why is it important for website relaunches?

A redirect simply tells your browser to go from an old page URL to a new page URL. This is important for website relaunches because your old website's URLs (like /clients.html) might either not exist or change (to something like /clients) with new the website design or content management system. The difference between "/clients.html" and "/clients" might not look like much to you or me, but to a search engine or a web browser, it is as different as night and day.

Redirects are important because:

1. The search engines could take weeks or months to re-index your new pages so they appear in the search results. And, if you have important keywords in the old page's content, it could be a long, long time before your organic ranking returns for those keywords.

2. If another website linked to your old URL, any visitor who clicks on the link will get an error code on your website rather than a page with your content. So, you made someone who was kind enough to link to your website, or yourself, look incompetent (visitors will assume either the website with the link or your website has a problem).

3. If you are a high-tech company, could be a big bummer for your street-cred, dude.

Technical aspects

Technically, a redirect is often called a "server-side 301 redirect." We don't need to go into the specifics because this is pretty basic stuff for good web developers - you just need to be sure your web designer/developer understands and commits to implementing redirects for you.

Also, Google has all kinds of info on this. Just search "301 redirect" and you'll find all kinds of great information.

Practical aspects

The first thing you have to do is create a list of all your existing pages/URLs. Then, decide what new pages/URLs they should redirect to. Some people will use Google Webmaster Tools to see which pages are indexed and/or have inbound links and only redirect for those pages/URLs, particularly if they have a lot of pages. Then, rather than show a 404 error code when someone visits any other obsolete URL, show your sitemap or another page on your new website. Also, your developer might have a simple technique for managing redirects.

In any event, it is critical that you discuss redirects with your web designer (1) before you hire them (so you're sure they understand it), and (2) during the redesign process so you're sure your existing URLs are all cataloged and the redirects can be properly implemented.

There are numerous obstacles in using typography on web sites, one which is that a visitor may not have the specific font loaded on his computer and will therefore not see the exact font. This can however be overcome by placing such "exotic" fonts in images.

When it comes to imagery the points to keep in mind is to ensure that they are relevant to the content, they must be interesting and they are appealing to the visitor. Building your own website is not difficult, there are many great programs to use, people do it every day. But, it is like moving. Chances are you know you want to move, you know you have to move, but you are not packed, don't have a map, don't know where you are going, have wrong information about where you are going and don't know how to get there.

One of the most common issues I run into with new clients is a lack of content. After we get past how much the website is going to cost and start planning it, I ask about content. I usually get a blank stare, or they offer me a token 3 pages of information. Then I have to go into my long, boring, "all about content" speech...which you are getting right now.

If this is your first website, you are probably not thinking in terms of performance or the website making you money, you are thinking about how it looks. Focusing on looks primarily can lead you into a ditch. At the end of the day, after your website is built and you are used to it and have had it for a year or so, the newness wears off and you start to focus on the real elements of the website: functionality and traffic.

Without going into great detail about SEO, it is fair to say that if there was one singular item that will enable the success of your website it is content. New, fresh, original content, and you probably don't have much of it.

You are better off if you start to develop your content before you start building your website. If you have your content ready to go, that means you are ready to start building your site, you are ready to move. It makes it much easier on the person or company building the website also. Developing your content and building a website are two different things and it is easier to do one at a time.

At the core of good content is keywords. When I say successful, I mean you get as much free traffic as you can, from the people who have a good chance of buying from you or using your services, not lookie loos or tire kickers, real prospective customers.

One of the easiest ways to get an idea of good keywords is to use the free Google keyword tool. Type in just one of your main words and see what pops up, make a list, remove ones that are not relevant or you don't think will bring the right traffic and you should have a good list to work from.

The main words should be the main navigation items of your new site. The main nav items should have pages that have the main keyword in the file name, page title and at least one H1 tag. Use the other related words on that main page. You can find related words when you type in the main word. If you can prepare at least 15 to 25 pages of content, organized by keyword, then you are ready to build your new website.

Bear in mind that the more original, relevant copy you have on your site, the greater chance you have of people linking to it. It must be updated and added to often, but that is a subject for another article.

An easy way to develop good content is to make a list of the top ten questions your customers ask you, the most common. Write them down and then answer them, in detail. Then think of all the questions your customers should be asking you but are not. Write those down, with detailed answers. If this technique doesn't give you a good amount of content, pretend you are at a mixer or social gathering and people are asking you about your business, what would they ask? How would you answer? This can be another good technique for coming up with good copy.

For most of us, writing is difficult. If you are blessed with the ability to write, know that you are a special person in terms of the Internet. One of the most valuable things on the Web is original content. Original content is like honey to the bee in terms of traffic, so if you can write you have one up on everyone else.

If writing is hard work, like it is for me, you may want to hire a copywriter. Copywriters are not as expensive as you think, most are easy to work with and many are SEO and Web savvy. Many of my clients will have a brief phone conversation with a copywriter and we will receive well written, SEO'd content within a day or so...ready to go on the website, it is well worth the money.

After you have your content, then it is time to look at layout. Look at your competitors and compare your website to theirs. Make sure to position yourself against your competitors. Make sure you site can be navigated easily and people can find what they are looking for quickly.

So you've decided to start blogging. Or you've been told that Google likes regularly updated content on your website. Tis true, and what's more, users like it too.

But before you launch into the blogosphere, do me a favour and stop to think awhile. For this reason - it looks a bit half-hearted if users arrive at your website only to see five or six posts that were written in a burst of energy a year and a half ago, and then... nothing.

Establishing and maintaining a blog requires effort. I actually find writing posts, articles, newsletters pretty enjoyable. But it does require some dedication. Here are a few tips I've picked up along the way:

Start as you mean to go on. Don't start with a bang and then fizzle out. Think about how much time you can realistically commit on a regular basis to your blog or website. If that's just an hour once a month, then fine - but keep it consistent. That way, users know what to expect.
Have a set time in your diary once a day/week/month when you'll update your website/blog. Set a reminder in your calendar so you can't avoid it! Ok, so this is real life, so things will crop up that mean you can't always do what you'd planned. But you can make sure you fill in the gaps as soon as you have a spare moment.
Think about where you'll be getting your ideas from. Here are just a few suggestions, I'm sure you'll come up with more:
- Keep an eye at what's going on in your industry/sector and share your opinions
- Share some of the knowledge you use when working with your clients
- Answer the questions that you had when first starting out in the industry
- Share a solution you've arrived as a result of a problem in your day-to-day work

Create a schedule with dates, future post titles and ideas - sit down every two or three months & plan out future posts. Print it out & pin it on your notice board - no getting away from it then! I started out with this strategy this year, and it's incredible the difference it's made to the regularity of posts on my blog!

If you're limited on time, consider one of these options:
- Rather than long, in-depth posts, just keep an eye out for useful, informative or engaging posts by other writers - and then link to them, with your own thoughts & comments on the subject
- Re-use content you may already have accumulated - articles, user guides, press releases, etc. But make sure they're interesting, up-to-date and relevant!
- Find someone else to blog for you - there are companies that will offer this as a regular service to clients. Ideally, you'll sit down to discuss & agree topics in advance. Work out who will be doing the research, and what input is required from you.

Remember to publicise as well as write! Use article publishing sites; put a link to your blog in your email signature; use Social Media to tell people about your new post; link back to posts from your newsletter; and tell everyone you know about your blog & where to find it!

This will make sure that users have the least amount of trouble accessing different pages of your site.

An optimum web site brings together a classy look with easy navigation. When a user open up your site, their first impression should be "Wow! What a great site. And then when they start to work their way around your site, they should find it easy to navigate to find what they are looking for.

Should an External Link Open in the Same Window Or in a New Window?

There has long been a controversy between those who think that all links leading offsite should open in a new window, and those who think they should open in the same window. I maintain that this is not a real controversy.

The "controversy":

Usually, but by no means always, those wanting to open a link in a new window are the owners of the website, and those in favor of using the same window are standards-supporting web designers.

The usual reason for favoring a new window opening is that the owner of the website is afraid of losing viewers. If the link opens in the same window, then the viewer has left his website. Of course, this does not mean that the viewer is gone forever. To my knowledge, there is no evidence for or against this.

The reason for favoring the same window is that strict adherence to web standards requires not using the target attribute of the link to open a new window, as this attribute has been deprecated.

In addition to this argument, the web designer usually points out that the viewer has two ways of dealing with an off-site link. He can choose to just click it, with the idea of using his BACK button to return to the original website. Or he can right-click the link and choose "Open in a New Window".

Why there should NOT be a "controversy":

To the best of my understanding, the reason for the W3C ban on the target attribute is that HTML - the language they are being "strict" about - is supposed to contain only information about WHAT is to be shown in the window of the browser. It is not supposed to concern itself with HOW or WHERE it is shown.

HOW the information is shown is dictated by CSS. Interactions between the viewer and the browser are governed by the DOM. So consequently, opening a new window should be done by scripting.

This is why there should be no controversy. If the site owner wants offsite links to open in a new window, then the web designer can do so by using scripting. This will not violate the "strictness" of the W3C, and the webpage will validate. See the paragraph below for an easy way of accomplishing this.

There have been a number of formats developed over the years to store raster graphics. Some of the most popular formats are discussed below, each with their advantages and disadvantages.

BMP - Bitmap Graphics (Avoid wherever possible)

Easy to create with the built-in Windows Paint program.
Long history, therefore good, universal support.
No compression means the format is lossless.
Creates huge files since no file compression is used.
No transparency.

GIF - Graphics Interchange Format (Good for the web, on images of less than 256 colours, for example simple geometric shapes e.g. bullets for lists)

Creates small files as good compression is used.
Universally supported across platforms.
Transparency supported.
Animation supported.
Palette of colours limited to 256 per image.
Transparency is only 1-bit, therefore no translucency.

PostScript is a format developed by Adobe to describe pages to a printer, plotter, or screen. Rather than storing straight data it stores instructions for the makeup of the page. Fonts are stored as individual character vector objects, for example, so they can be printed at as high a resolution as the printer can print. Macromedia's Flash technology is an excellent example of vector graphics working at their finest - whatever the window size, vector elements of the Flash movie appear crisply anti-aliased, and individual frames can even be printed in high resolution due to the vector-based nature.

File size is also greatly reduced. However, each format has an individual purpose. A photograph cannot be expressed as a vector graphic because it simply isn't vector data. A sunset cannot be defined mathematically, at the risk of starting a philosophical argument on the world around us. The real world is not vector-based. Vector graphics are reserved for images such as typefaces, lines, curves. Complex vector images can be created but they have been created specifically in vectors. I realize this may seem obvious, but it’s surprising how often businesses and individuals may use a certain type of look for paper marketing tools, another look for web marketing tools, and still another look for outdoor advertisements.

There is a very successful landscape firm in my area. They use a large single (oak shaped) green leaf. Underneath their leaf they have attractive lettering in black giving the company name and phone number. It’s is easy to read. I can always tell it’s them. Their trucks, marketing flyers, newspaper advertisements, business cards and bus stop ads are all the same. During the summer, I may see their logo as much as three or four times per day; once when I read the morning paper, whenever a truck is working, or whenever I drive past the bus stop.

Experts who have studied advertising strategies understand that most human beings will seek comfort and familiarity. The more often the public is exposed to your logo, the more likely you’ll be able to sell your products once you have an opportunity to meet face to face.

To summarize, make sure your logo works for your business, advertise consistently using your logo consistently and then ask for a sale. Also, remember to build customer loyalty and increase up sale by using logos on all follow up correspondence. If the person you are talking to needs your product or service and they’ve seen your logo 10-15 times, it’s highly likely you’ll get a yes on your next sale.

Some 'Golden Rules' Of Logo Design

While the variables are infinite (that's a good thing - it means that every logo can be unique) there are certain benchmarks (I hesitate to call them rules) that if you follow, will pretty well insure that you'll end up with a decent and workable logo. While whether or not a logo is 'good' remains completely subjective, following these pointers will give you a logo that's usable, practical and promising a long shelf life.

1) Uniqueness
Your logo should be able to stand out as completely 'yours'. It's surprising how many times we get asked to 'copy' logos - we've even had clients request a 'version' of my brand. Not a good idea. On top of the potential legal complications nothing screams 'unprofessional' like a logo that's looks even remotely like someone else's. Do not copy. I'll say it again. Do. Not. Copy.

2) Timeless
Every few years there's a trend, or fad, that new logos seems to embrace. A few years ago it was the 'swoosh' - made logos all hi-tech and 'internety'. Trouble is, everybody jumped on that bandwagon and the treatment rapidly became hackneyed and trite. Few years hence, and we've got lots of people stuck with out of date designs. The latest design logo trend is so-called 2.0, a technique that (like a lot of design trends) can be traced back to Apple Computers. Take your logo, add a 'gel' treatment, give it glassy reflection at the bottom and you're all set. (hey - the 3D version of our house could qualify). Web 2.0 is still going strong, but I'll go out on a limb and say it will be yesterday's news by end of summer.

3) Gimmick Free
Special FX and filters are usually applied, by inexperienced designers, to logos that are 'missing something'. Trouble is, what the logo is generally missing is any design integrity, and adding bevels, lens flares and drop shadows is the logo design version of 'putting lipstick on a pig'. While it certainly shows how cool the latest design software is, it doesn't do much for the professionalism of your mark. Such treatments are fine for glamour shots (used as display pieces on brochures and the like) but are only going to cause grief down the road, especially when it comes to application of your new logo on standard business material. Your logo should be as technically simple as possible for adaptability, which just happened to be number 4 on our list...

4) Adaptability
Over the life of your company, you'll want to plaster your logo over everything you send out. That's the point of having a logo in the first place. In order to do this, you'll need a logo that's adaptable to every occasion and while they may look 'pretty' , the design gimmicks we just talked about render your logo impractical for many of these uses. Some of these uses - checks, FAXes, embroidery, newspaper ads, invoices, letterheads, etc. Your new logo has to work on all of them. You'll also need a quality black and white version that can reproduce as a halftone grayscale, or in the cases of low-resolution BW reproduction, a linear version.

5) Scalability
When using your logo, you'll need to be able to use it small. Real small. Postage stamp size. Classic example of this - over the years, I've designed a load of sports event posters that feature logos from dozens of event sponsors. Space only permits the logos to be featured as very small images and it's always the simpler logos that stand out when viewed from a distance. The cluttered logos aren't recognizable to any great degree and the sponsors are probably wasting their money, especially if inclusion on the poster is the only benefit of their sponsorship. When it comes to scalability, the text portion of the logo is the most important, as that's the piece you want people to remember. Scrawny, sickly text doesn't read very well at half an inch high.

6) Color is Secondary
Colors are extremely important. Using consistent corporate colors will become part of your brand - that's understood. However, when it comes to the design of your logo, color must always be secondary. A logo that requires color to 'hold' the design together is fine when reproduction is optimal - websites, 4 color process printing and what have you - but even then only if the size is appropriate as well. Logos that rely too much on color tend to blend together when used small (see above) and unless the contrast between the two colors is pronounced, will be a grey mess if used in black and white. As for low-resolution reproduction (FAXES, checks, etc) you can forget about readability completely - logos that use color as a design cornerstone usually come out as black blotches on a FAX transmission and with all their money, banks still haven't figured out how to print a decent check.

7) Appropriate Aspect Ratio & Footprint
The aspect ratio of a logo is the relationship between a logo's height and it's width. Bottom line, you don't want a logo that's too tall, or too wide. Square'ish' is always best as this allows the maximum adaptability of a logo, especially when it's being used in conjunction with other artwork. The 'footprint' of a logo refers to the amount of physical space that's required to place a logo on any page. If the footprint is 'wonky' - trailing design elements 'poke' outside the footprint - it can greatly affect the size that the design can be used at, as well as the visual impact of same.

Like most 'rules' of design, not all of these will apply in every situation, and in many cases, we'll toss them out completely. However, they should give you a road map that will help you navigate the sometimes frustrating creative process to design your new logo.

The emergence of the word "logo" can be traced back to ancient Greece.
